Quick Guide
  • Zoo Sustainability is an infrastructure component of Zoo Reputation. The official management guide identifies sustainable power sources and recycling bins as its inputs.
  • Open Zoo Management > Overview, check Zoo Sustainability, add recycling bins and replace standard generators with affordable wind or solar power, then inspect the rating again.
  • This is separate from a Wildlife Reserve’s Biodiversity Rating. Keep power coverage and Caretaker access working while improving the zoo metric.

Check that you are improving the right rating

Sustainability belongs to the zoo’s infrastructure assessment within Zoo Reputation. The management guide lists the number of sustainable power sources and recycling bins as the influences. Its improvement instructions focus on these two changes, rather than adding any object that happens to look natural.

Two different ratings in the official guides
RatingWhere it appliesWhat the guide describes
Zoo SustainabilityA zoo, within Zoo ReputationSustainable power sources and recycling bins.
Biodiversity RatingA Wildlife ReserveEcosystem and Research ratings, including restoration and monitoring.

Do not substitute one metric for the other. Releasing a diverse set of suitable animals can relate to reserve biodiversity, but that is not the documented direct route for increasing the zoo Sustainability number covered here.

Improve the zoo rating in a controlled sequence

Record the current assessment

Open Overview in Zoo Management and inspect Zoo Sustainability. Start with that displayed rating so you can assess the effect of the change.

Add usable recycling bins

Place more recycling bins throughout the zoo in places where guests can use them and Caretakers can empty them.

Review standard generators

Where the zoo can afford it, replace standard power with wind turbines or solar panels. Inspect the coverage radius of the proposed source before relying on it.

Keep services connected

Check that facilities still receive power and the power source remains accessible for maintenance. A sustainability improvement should not leave essential utilities unpowered.

Revisit Overview

Inspect Zoo Sustainability again and repeat the review as the zoo grows. The guide provides no universal number of bins or generators required for a particular score.

Account for sustainable power tradeoffs

The construction guide distinguishes Standard from Eco-Friendly power sources. Eco-friendly options usually have better range and no running costs, but they cost more to build, and biome conditions can reduce their radius. This makes the actual placement preview more useful than assuming one new source covers exactly the same area as the old generator.

Power is delivered within a source’s radius, and Mechanics need access for servicing. A breakdown can leave its covered facilities without power, including water filtration. Check both coverage and maintenance access before removing an existing source. This is a dependency check, not a claim that a particular overlap pattern is the optimal layout.

Before replacing a generator
QuestionWhy it matters
Can the zoo afford the build?Eco-friendly power can have a higher upfront cost.
What radius is shown here?Biome can affect the available coverage.
Are essential facilities covered?Power loss can interrupt services such as filtration.
Can a Mechanic reach the source?Power facilities need maintenance.

Keep recycling bins useful

Recycling bins work like ordinary litter bins while also increasing Sustainability. The tradeoff is that they take Caretakers longer to empty. Guests use nearby bins; bins fill and can overflow if cleaning is not maintained. Adding many bins without considering their service route can therefore create a new operational problem.

Use this as a reason to recheck the zoo after an upgrade, rather than as a fixed staffing formula. The retained guide establishes the longer emptying time, but it does not establish a universal Caretaker-to-bin ratio. Keep your changes within the actual services and budget you can maintain.

What the evidence does and does not promise

The documented route is specific: inspect the rating, add recycling bins and move toward affordable sustainable power, then review the result. The sources do not give hidden scoring weights, a guaranteed point increase per bin or an exact maximum-score layout. Those values should remain unknown rather than being estimated from the number of objects placed.
