Quick Guide
  • Start with a mode that matches your goal, then build a connected entrance and path network, powered staff facilities and one suitable enclosure. Hire the staff needed to operate them before bringing in animals.
  • Use Pin Species to inspect the planned habitat requirements before adoption. Add the correct food, water, shelter and enrichment, then check the animal’s Info Panel after transport.
  • Expand only after the first habitat and services are functioning. Management reports and heatmaps help separate welfare, access, power and cash problems.

Choose a mode and learn the view controls

Career provides objectives and medals; Sandbox lets you choose economy and welfare settings; Franchise creates an online network. For a first session, decide whether you want scenario guidance or your own build rules before creating the zoo. A Franchise start also requires a Frontier account and internet access.

Build one complete operating loop

Establish the entrance and spawn route

Find Zoo Entrance under Facilities > Services > Zoo Entrance. Guests appear at a Guest Spawner and must pass an entrance gate to buy a ticket, so place the spawner near the entrance and connect the route.

Connect paths before scattering facilities

Open Paths and choose a line, curve, drawing or stamp tool. Connect the entrance, planned facilities and habitat gate. Guest Paths serve general circulation; Staff Paths provide staff-only routes.

Place the facilities your staff need

Provide a Keeper Hut for food preparation, a Trade Centre for animal movements and a Staff Room for breaks. Add the veterinary and other facilities your chosen animal-care plan needs. Every staff facility must have power and path access.

Hire staff into the zoo

Open Hire Staff, choose a role and place the person on a path. Keepers handle food and habitat care; other duties need the appropriate roles. A facility alone is not an employee.

Create a valid first habitat

Use a continuous barrier loop with resistance and climb-proofing suitable for the intended species. Add exactly one Staff Gate and connect it to the path network. Leave room for the planned group and its future growth.

Pin the species before buying

Select the habitat, open Animals and choose Pin Species. Add the intended species to the selection and confirm. Use the combined requirements to plan usable space, terrain, temperature, plants and other needs.

Equip the enclosure before transport

Use the Habitats browser to place appropriate feeders, nests where needed and enrichment. Provide accessible clean drinking water and shelter the animal can actually fit beneath. Add filtration if the habitat contains a water body.

Move animals and inspect the result

Transport animals to the prepared habitat. Select an animal to inspect its Info Panel and adjust the enclosure against its actual welfare readings, rather than assuming the build is finished because the walls look complete.

This sequence is an editorial ordering of the official construction and care instructions. It is intended to prevent disconnected pieces of a zoo from being mistaken for an operating system; it is not a tested fastest start or a guaranteed profitable layout.

Keep food preparation, access and utilities working

A Keeper prepares food at a Keeper Hut before delivering it. The official guide explains that a long trip between hut and habitat reduces efficiency, so consider that route when placing your first buildings. Staff also need somewhere to rest; without an available Staff Room, their energy and happiness can deteriorate.

Power coverage is a radius, while path access is a separate requirement. A building can be close to a generator yet still lack a usable route. Mechanics maintain utilities, so their access matters too. Habitat water bodies need a pump connected to an active filtration network for cleanliness; aquariums have their own connection requirements.

For guests, provide the facilities that match their needs rather than spending all starting cash on scenery. Food and drink shops, toilets and bins each address a different service issue. Some shops need power and a Vendor; check the selected facility’s requirements and status.

Diagnose the first warnings before expanding

A first-pass check using documented panels and reports
Warning areaWhere to inspectWhat to check
Animal welfareAnimal Info Panel; relevant habitat/animal heatmapFood and clean water access, shelter, space, social group, terrain, temperature, cleanliness and suitable enrichment.
Staff or building operationStaff and Facilities reports; selected building Info PanelThe correct staff role, an available rest facility, connected paths and power.
Cash pressureManagement > FinancesCurrent income and expenses, then the cost of further construction, wages and operations.
General zoo performanceManagement > OverviewReputation and the snapshots of welfare, guest happiness and finance.

An enclosure can become inadequate after a juvenile matures or the population grows. Continue checking individual welfare and collective space needs. Likewise, a new path or building does not prove an existing warning has cleared: inspect the affected panel again before adding another habitat.

Do not ignore the running costs

The finance view shows money coming in and going out. Use it to decide whether the next addition is affordable; this guide does not prescribe an optimal ticket price, staff ratio or starting-animal ranking.

Useful next decisions

Compare the three modes before committing to a long-running save, and check platform and online requirements if Franchise access matters to you.

For this guide, “working” means the documented components and care checks are connected into a sensible first-zoo workflow. It does not certify an installed game, rule out known defects or establish a financial outcome. The sources were checked on 19 October 2026; the latest observed patch context is 1.0.5.
