- A habitat needs a continuous barrier loop and one Staff Gate connected to the path network. Match its barriers and environment to the intended animals.
- Pin Species lets you inspect collective requirements before adoption: habitat Animals tab > Pin Species > add the species > Confirm Selection.
- Exhibits are self-contained homes for smaller animals. They still need path access, power and a Keeper with a Keeper Hut; use the Exhibit Info Panel to set the environment and add animals.
Choose the right housing first
The official guide distinguishes barrier-based Habitats and Aquariums from standalone Exhibits. Larger land animals use habitats; flying animals can need a roofed habitat; fully aquatic animals use aquariums. Small animals may use exhibits. Check the selected species instead of choosing an enclosure purely by appearance.

| Housing | Core structure | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Habitat | Continuous barrier loop and a Staff Gate. | The barrier and usable space must fit every planned animal. |
| Roofed habitat / aviary | A habitat with appropriate roofing and supports. | Flying-space requirements are species-specific. |
| Aquarium | Barrier perimeter and Staff Gate with aquatic setup. | Water and animal requirements need their own checks. |
| Exhibit | Standalone enclosure for smaller animals. | No Staff Gate is required; path, power and Keeper service still are. |
Build a valid habitat
Check the intended animal
Read its Zoopedia habitat requirements, particularly barrier resistance, climbing restrictions and usable space. Plan for the whole group and offspring.
Draw a continuous perimeter
Use the Habitat Barrier tool and choose suitable resistance and climb-proofing. Close a single loop with the line or curve tool; a decorative barrier segment that is not part of the habitat perimeter will not close the habitat.
Add one Staff Gate and connect it
Place one Staff Gate in the completed barrier and connect it to your path network. A merged habitat with more than one gate is invalid until extra gates are removed.
Pin the planned species
Select the habitat, open Animals and choose Pin Species. Select the species, use + Add to Selection, then Confirm Selection. Read the combined requirements before placing animals.
Meet the pinned requirements
Add appropriate terrain, foliage, temperature arrangements, accessible food and water, shelter, nests where needed and suitable enrichment. Leave usable space rather than judging the footprint alone.
Transport animals and recheck welfare
Bring the animals into the completed habitat, then inspect their welfare and make adjustments. Provide ongoing Keeper food/cleaning and barrier maintenance rather than treating construction as a one-time task.

A null barrier defines an invisible perimeter; it does not physically stop animals. The official guide requires natural barriers or scenery that actually block escape where null barriers are used. Similarly, only watertight barrier types can contain water.
Check usable space and shelter
The game’s space needs can involve navigable land, water surface, depth, flying space and climbing area. These are not interchangeable measurements. Use the habitat and selected-species requirements to see what the planned group needs; do not copy a single square-metre figure from an unrelated animal.

Shelter counts only when the animal can fit beneath it. A roof that looks large from above can therefore be a poor check of usable shelter. Inspect the relevant requirement after building and keep the animal’s physical fit and access in mind. This general rule is not a verified fix for every shelter-registration defect.

Bodies of water also need clean-water support, and an animal may not be able to reach water across an overly steep slope. Keepers must continue cleaning the habitat and replenishing food. A suitable enclosure must keep functioning after the construction panel is closed.
Build and configure an exhibit
Open the Exhibits browser
Choose a complete blueprint or use the available construction options for a custom exhibit.
Place and connect it
Place the exhibit where guests can see it. It requires path connection and power, plus a Keeper with access to a Keeper Hut. A walkthrough exhibit must connect directly into the path network.
Set up its interior
Add appropriate scenery and resting points, using the Exhibit Info Panel’s Customisation tab as needed.
Configure the environment
Use the Environment tab to set the conditions required by the selected animals, including temperature, terrain and salinity where relevant.
Add animals through the panel
Use the Animals tab to add or remove animals and configure resting-point placement. In a zoo with a Trade Centre, animals acquired through Animal Trading transfer to and from exhibits instantly.
Evidence: Habitats & Exhibits - Guides - Planet Zoo 2
Exhibits maintain their configured environmental constants when powered, but that does not remove animal care. Keepers still maintain food and cleanliness. Resting points are needed for many exhibit animals; some shoaling fish and butterflies can also move freely.
Check cohabitation and guest access separately
Sharing a housing category does not automatically make two species a suitable mix. The official guide permits shared homes where housing requirements match; the combined space, terrain and other requirements still have to work for all residents. Read the selected species’ Zoopedia relationship and housing fields before building a mixed enclosure.

These examples show why “it is a bird enclosure” is not enough to decide whether visitors may walk through it. The captured species pages also contain work-in-progress warnings, so use the current in-game details when deciding on a live build. This guide does not turn the examples into a universal compatibility list.

A final operating check
Before expanding, confirm that the habitat is valid, staff have a connected route, the selected group meets its recorded requirements and ongoing food/cleaning are covered. For an exhibit, check power, path, Keeper access and the environment settings. After the population changes, inspect the requirements again.
