Quick Guide
  • Release Groups use suitable animals already in Animal Storage. Research the species if its group options are locked, choose a Group Type and fill the displayed membership requirements.
  • Finalise Release Group cannot be undone: the animals enter acclimatisation and cannot return to the zoo. Check the membership and destination before confirming.
  • Not every species has a suitable Wildlife Reserve. A group’s requirements and an appropriate Established Ecosystem are separate checks; documented setup rules do not prove every crash or disabled button has been fixed.

Understand the irreversible step

Finalisation is permanent

Once finalised, a group begins acclimatisation and its animals cannot be brought back into the zoo. The guide explicitly says Finalise Release Group cannot be undone. Treat this as a commitment, not a temporary way to test whether a button works.

The group is made from suitable animals of the same species, selected from Animal Storage. An empty group is only a plan: its existence does not mean its member requirements have been met. The Group Type determines the number and composition to release, so use the actual values shown for that type rather than a generic animal count.

Create and populate the group

Unlock the species option if required

Species research in a zoo may be needed before its Release Group options become available. Check this first when the species choice is locked.

Use eligible stored animals

Move suitable animals into Animal Storage. The group editor selects from storage, rather than from any animal still walking around a habitat.

Open the group screen

In a zoo, open Animal Trading & Storage and its Release Groups screen. In a reserve, use Release Groups after placing a Research Outpost.

Choose the group definition

Select Create Release Group, choose an available species, choose its Group Type and select Create.

Meet the displayed membership requirements

Select the created group and open Edit Group Members. Add or remove appropriate animals currently in storage until the listed requirements are met.

Check the commitment and finalise

Review the selected animals, Group Type and intended release. Only then select Finalise Release Group, acknowledging that the action is irreversible.

Choose a suitable reserve and ecosystem

After finalising, the guide offers Release to Wildlife Reserve or Quick Release for immediate Conservation Credits. For a reserve release from a zoo, selecting Release to Wildlife Reserve opens the Planet Hub with suitable reserves. Choose one and use Travel to Wildlife Reserve, then select an appropriate Established Ecosystem and complete Release to Wildlife Reserve.

“Established” is a real ecosystem state. The reserve guide ties it to the ecosystem’s area, terrain and nature requirements; some groups need Flourishing conditions as well. Inspect the requirements of the actual group and ecosystem instead of assuming any green space or reserve with a familiar name qualifies.

The official FAQ says only species with an appropriate Wildlife Reserve can be released into those spaces. A missing suitable destination is therefore an eligibility issue to investigate, not proof that every animal should have the same release option.

Check the reason a group is not ready

Documented checks before treating a blocked release as a defect
CheckWhat to inspect
Species optionWhether the required species research has been completed.
Available membersWhether suitable animals are in Animal Storage.
CompositionThe selected Group Type and the actual listed requirements in Edit Group Members.
DestinationA Wildlife Reserve appropriate for that species.
EcosystemAn appropriate Established ecosystem and any additional requirements the group lists.

These are setup checks grounded in the official workflow. They do not establish a universal diagnosis for every cannot-finalise message. No species-specific numerical release recipe is supplied here, and a disabled option should not be filled in with a number borrowed from another species.

Keep crash reports and workarounds in perspective

The retained player discussion reports crashes and lost groups during releases. One player said finalising, travelling to the reserve manually through the Hub and releasing from its group screen worked for them. Later posts reported crashes and disappearing animals even when releasing directly inside the reserve. That disagreement prevents presenting the travel sequence as a reliable fix.

The official 1.0.5 note also identifies stability and save/Conservation Credit concerns as continuing priorities. Its announced changes are not proof that every release failure is resolved. If the required setup is satisfied but the action still fails, preserve the specific warning, platform/version and sequence for an official issue report; do not repeatedly finalise valuable animals simply to test an uncertain workaround.
